March on Washington, 21 January 2017

I happened to be in Hong Kong during the Umbrella Revolution in 2014 and documented the signs of protest created by the students encamped in the streets. It is in keeping with that spirit I post these 78 images of signs carried by protesters in Washington D.C. on January 21, 2017. It is also important to archive all of the documentation of the march that day and all of the others that took place in large and small cities all across America and in solidarity in cities across the world, because the press seemed so uninterested in reporting the proceedings. Friends I spoke to in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco all remarked that the press seemed eerily absent. No one reported seeing a single news helicopter and no one ran into a single print journalist or photographer. And then, all of the media reported very low numbers for attendance. For example, the newspapers reported 500,000 people in Washington, D.C. when the local police estimate of attendance was one million and in Los Angeles the press reported figures of 100,000 while local police estimated the crowd at 500,000. Trump had just been inaugurated literally the day before. One can only imagine how much security had been present and how many journalists. It was as if they had all taken their marbles and gone home.
