natural history (cow spine), 2023

While working with the falcon I became aware that we both live in the world as part of an observed class. The gaze that entraps women and the one that ensnares animals is not the same but we share a form of embodiment that is forcefully relegated to the role of the observed; a gaze that limits exchange in order to attain mastery and exert power. Thinking about the shared effects of this unwanted paradigm has led me to this new body of work constructed of hybrid forms that incorporate the remains of animals into my own body; a way of thinking our materiality and our interdependence. Three new works in the series natural history have been completed so far. natural history (cow spine), 2023 is one of the three. It incorporates the spine of a cow, found in a field in Cody, Wyoming into my body. natural history (cow spine), 2023 is cast in tombasil (bronze).
